What is the meaning of expression “tongue sown in the elastic mask” in this sentence?
Braking of the vehicle is signalled by light passing through the small circular hole against the stop lamp of the RH cluster lamp (in its upper half).
In case of need, you can fully screen the RH rear cluster lamp by covering all the holes with a tongue sown in the elastic mask.
At the stated regimes of night driving under combat conditions, except for the above stated lights, no other lights must be switched on.
Is it supposed to be “sewn” instead of “sown”?
If so, it could mean you would cut a piece of fabric in the shape of a tongue and sew it onto the elastic mask in the area of the lights. That would block the light. But why couldn’t you just use duct tape? I’m a professional seamstress, and I would put a piece of tape over the hole and then a scrap of fabric on the other side, to cover the rest of the sticky tape.
