Frequency Mixers
Explain the need of frequency mixer?
Frequency mixers are used in all sorts of radio frequency transmitters and receivers. Whenever you multiply two waveforms together you (more or less) get energy at both the sum and difference of the two frequencies. If one waveform is a fixed local oscillator, and if you use an output filter to keep just one of the two mixed spectral components, then you’ve effectively shifted the other input waveform in frequency by a fixed amount. The technique works both for upconversion in a radio transmitter and downconversion in a radio receiver.
