Capacitors Various
How tricky / safe is it to replace a microwave magnetron myself?
I have an LG microwave (just outside of warranty, expensive over-the-range) and the magnetron just failed according to a service guy. A friend of mine across the country has the exact magnetron that I need for $30 shipped… is it safe to replace the magnetron myself? I am a licensed engineer, but I do not have any experience in microwaves.
Besides using them, of course. I know there is a large capacitor & various fire risks involved, but I would think that I could follow the LG service manual (http://136.166.4.200/contents/Microwave/LMV1650.htm) and just swap the magnetron out.
Any advice from those WITH EXPERIENCE would be appreciated! Thank you much!
Assuming the service guy was correct on his diagnosis, yes, it is a straight forward repair. Just be sure you discharge the capacitor and be careful of all the sharp parts. But this could be a costly job if the service tech miss diagnosed your problem.
